Ilorin Schools Sports Enters Second Phase Despite Labour Strike Action
Ongoing Kwara State Secondary Schools Trackand Field Championship which began on Monday may suffer setback on account of the recent strike declared by the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and its sister union, Trade Union Congress, TUC, it was gathered on Tuesday.
But organisers of the games assures that they would find a way around the matter.
The games is being put together by Kwara State Sports Commission, KSC, in collaboration with State Universal Basic Education, SUBEB and Ministry of Education.
Despite initial hiccup brought by the strike, the event still held with funfair at the stadium.
Students and members of the public turned out in large numbers to watch the students compete in the games.
The games featuring schools in Kwara Central is the first stage of the championship which will capture all three senatorial zones of the state.
For Kwara Central, the games are holding in three phases. The first semi final held on Monday. The second phase begins today.
According to Alh Ibrahim Bako, Director Sports, Kwara State Sports Commission, KSC, 26 schools in all are involved in athletic meet holding at the Kwara State Stadium, Ilorin.
But the smooth running of the games suffered a bit of a worry after many schools down tooled in compliance with directive from the labour unions.
The decision of the labour unions was due to the alleged failure of the Federal Government to address issues affecting workers, such as the minimum wage, insecurity, corruption, and poor governance.
Also, both unions had made some demands, which the government had allegedly failed to address following the recent crisis in Imo that resulted in the alleged brutalisation of the NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero, and other members of the labour unions.
But speaking on this development, Alh Bako is optimistic that they will find a way around the challenge.
"I can assure you that it will not affect today's event. We will meet after today and discuss to find a way of completing the games," he said.
