A Nigerian Olympic medalist, Chike Chukwumerije, has urged sports ministries and other relevant stakeholders to prioritize the media welfare and well-being within their budgets.

Chukwumerije spoke at the SWAN Full Council Meeting and National Awards Conferment Ceremony held at the Global Luxury Suites, Kano,.

The call comes as part of efforts to enhance the visibility and coverage of sports activities, both nationally and internationally.

Chukwumerije, who represented Nigeria in Taekwondo at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, emphasized the crucial role the media plays in promoting sports, fostering athlete development, and engaging the public.

He highlighted the need for dedicated funding to support media coverage, including broadcasting, journalism, and digital platforms.

Speaking, Chukwumerije underscored how effective media coverage has elevated his profile and that of other athletes, attract sponsorship, and inspire the next generation of sports enthusiasts.

He stressed that investing in media infrastructure and talent would not only benefit athletes but also contribute to the growth of the sports industry and the nation's image on the global stage.

The former Olympian pointed out that while sports ministries allocate significant resources to training facilities, athlete welfare, and competitions, media support often receives less attention.

He urged policymakers to recognize the symbiotic relationship between sports and media, noting that increased visibility leads to greater interest, participation, and revenue opportunities.

Chukwumerije's advocacy aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance sports development in Nigeria and across Africa. With the continent's growing interest in sports, there is a growing recognition of the need for comprehensive media coverage to maximize the impact of athletic achievements and promote sports as a viable career path.

As Nigeria aims to strengthen its position in the global sports arena, Chukwumerije's initiative serves as a reminder of the importance of strategic investment in media to amplify the nation's sporting successes and inspire future generations of athletes.

By prioritizing media within sports budgets, stakeholders can harness the power of storytelling and digital engagement to showcase Nigeria's sporting prowess to the world.
