Shearnuts, Charcoal Exports Pose a Menace to $2.5 Billion Industry -- AmuGold Global
The annual revenue of $2.5 billion from shearbutter product manufacturing and exports is currently facing a significant threat due to the extensive production, procurement, and large-scale export of shearnuts in their raw state, as highlighted by Temitope Amujo, the representative of AmuGold Global, renowned producers of Jimpo Ori, an indigenous shearbutter product.
Amujo expressed these concerns on a Sunday in Ilorin during the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the company's establishment and 8th year
The occasion also featured the introduction of new product lines, initiatives for women's empowerment, and the presentation of scholarships to the winners of the Cute Baby competition, aimed at recognizing infants who benefit from shearbutter products.
"The export of shearbutter alone contributes significantly to Nigeria's economy, surpassing the $2.5 billion mark annually.
"However, the procurement of shear nuts, the primary ingredient for shearbutter production, does not yield as much value," he remarked.
Amujo, a recipient of training from the Tony Elumelu Foundation, highlighted additional challenges such as deforestation of shearbutter trees in rural regions for export purposes and the detrimental impact of Fulani herdsmen on demonstration farms, which collectively pose serious threats to the industry.
