A Celebratory Tribute to a Media Icon at 60
Alhaji Abdullateef Adebowale Adedeji is a soft-spoken and diligent media executive whose legacy continues to resonate in both Kwara and Lagos states. His significant contributions to the media landscape—particularly through his leadership at the Kwara State Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Kwara)—have left an indelible mark on the industry.
His journey as General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of Radio Kwara began on June 20, 2010, during the administration of Dr. Bukola Saraki. From the onset, Alhaji Adedeji brought innovation and transformation to the station. He introduced thought-provoking programmes that reflected the diversity and dynamism of the society, thereby reshaping the station's content to better serve its heterogeneous audience.
Beyond programming, he prioritized capacity building. Recognizing the importance of continuous learning in media, he organized seminars and workshops for both senior and junior staff. I was privileged to be part of the marketing team that benefited from his vision, attending the ARCON seminar in Ibadan from May 15th to 17th, 2017—a testament to his inclusive leadership.
Alhaji Adedeji’s commitment extended beyond the studio. He cultivated strong relationships with the host community, earning him prestigious traditional titles such as Otun Atobase of Offa from the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi Esuwoye II, and Borokini Adinni of Mende-Maryland Mosque in Lagos, conferred by the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari.
His tenure also coincided with notable administrative achievements. Notably, under his leadership, the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS) was established, centralizing state revenue collection. Radio Kwara, during this period, was twice recognized as the best revenue-generating parastatal in 2017 and 2018—a remarkable feat achieved against significant odds.
Affectionately known as DJ Youngest, Alhaji Adedeji also made his mark in sports development. His personal investment in beach soccer led to the game’s growth in Kwara State. Eventually, he was unanimously appointed Chairman of the Kwara State Beach Soccer Board. Under his leadership, the state hosted two editions of the Beach Soccer League—one in Patigi at Ahman Patigi University and another in Ilorin at the George Inih Stadium. His tenure also included a world-class seminar for coaches and stakeholders, further deepening the sport’s development.
Regrettably, despite his numerous achievements and reported backing by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, he was removed from his position as General Manager—a move many view as politically motivated. Yet, even in adversity, Alhaji Adedeji remained steadfast and committed, delivering results when he was least expected to and when trust was withdrawn.
As Alhaji Abdullateef Adebowale Adedeji Abdul marks his 60th birthday, we celebrate six decades of fulfillment, service, integrity, generosity, and compassion. May Almighty Allah continue to grant him strength, good health, and more impactful years ahead to serve humanity with the same grace and excellence he has always shown.
Happy 60th Birthday, Alhaji.
