Kwara's Badminton Gems Aim for Glory at Inaugural African School Games
Kwara State’s growing reputation as a powerhouse in youth sports has once again been reaffirmed as two of its emerging badminton stars, Adekunle Feranmi and Adekunle Oluwabotemi, have been selected to represent Nigeria at the 1st African School Sports Games taking place in Algiers, Algeria.
The multi-sport event, which brings together top student-athletes from across the continent, officially opens on Friday, July 26, 2025, and will run until August 5, 2025. Designed to promote unity, healthy competition, and grassroots talent development, the Games mark a major milestone for school sports in Africa.
Feranmi and Oluwabotemi earned their spots on Team Nigeria following their standout performances at the national school trials. Their selection reflects not only their individual brilliance but also Kwara State's rising prominence in national and continental badminton circles.
Guiding them through the tournament is their trusted coach, Mope Abubakar Kayode, a renowned figure in grassroots badminton development. His leadership and experience are expected to play a vital role in Team Nigeria’s quest for medals on the continental stage.
Reacting to the team’s inclusion, the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Mallam Bolakale Mogaji, expressed pride in the athletes and their coach, urging them to uphold the values of discipline, dedication, and excellence.
“Kwara continues to be a breeding ground for young champions. We are proud of Feranmi, Oluwabotemi, and Coach Mope for representing us at this historic event. We’re confident they will do us proud in Algeria,” he said.
As the continent's brightest young athletes gather in Algiers, all eyes from Kwara and across Nigeria will be on the badminton court — hopeful for a strong performance from the promising duo and their coach as they aim to bring home medals and glory.
