Edo State Reaffirms Commitment to Grooming Young Athletes Through National Youth Games

The Edo State Government has reiterated its commitment to using the National Youth Games (NYG) as a platform for discovering and nurturing future champions, stressing that the true essence of the competition lies in grassroots sports development rather than medal counts.

Speaking with journalists at the ongoing Games in Asaba, the Executive Director of Sports Development and Operations at the Edo State Sports Commission, Mrs. Chikere Sabina, commended the state government for providing the right platform for youths to harness their potential through sports.

She noted that while some states focus on medals and cash rewards as motivation—often fueling age cheating—the Edo State Government remains committed to grooming genuine talents for long-term growth.

“The Youth Games are meant for talent discovery and grassroots development. Edo State is focused on nurturing these talents in line with the vision of our government, rather than chasing quick wins through medals or financial rewards,” Sabina said.

She further called on organisers of the NYG to redefine its objectives to align with its founding purpose, noting that only then will the championship fully achieve its mission of raising the next generation of Nigerian sports stars.

According to her, athletes discovered from the Games will continue to receive the full support of the Edo State Government to develop their skills and compete at higher levels.
