NSC Reaffirms Drive for Stronger Stakeholder Partnerships in Sports Development

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to building strong partnerships with relevant stakeholders to promote and develop sports across Nigeria.

Chairman of the Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, stated this while declaring open the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Diamond Jubilee Anniversary at the VIP Lounge, Package A, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Mallam Dikko emphasized that effective collaboration with critical stakeholders has yielded positive results, particularly in the recently concluded sports federations’ elections — which, according to him, marked a clear departure from past exercises.

The NSC Chairman also used the occasion to address allegations of misappropriation of the FIFA grant by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). He clarified that the NFF does not have direct access to FIFA funds, as such funds are deposited in a designated account at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and can only be accessed with proper authorization.

He urged members of the media to always verify information and present balanced reports, especially at this critical time when the Super Eagles are striving to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

In his lecture titled “Political Will,” the Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Dr. Philip Shuaib, identified vision and commitment, courage to implement difficult reforms, and institutionalization as key factors driving political will.

He called on media practitioners to strengthen their role as amplifiers of government policies and programmes in the sports sector.

Dr. Shuaib noted that with Nigeria’s extensive sports infrastructure, abundance of talent, and President Bola Tinubu’s vision to redefine and solidify the sports sector, the country has the potential to become Africa’s hub for sports hosting and organization — similar to what is being achieved in Morocco.

Present at the event were chairmen of various sports federations, including Mr. Francis Obih of the Badminton Federation and Mr. Segun Runsewe of the Rugby Federation. Other dignitaries in attendance included Alhassan Yakmut and ace broadcaster Mainasara Ilo.
