Horseball, Marathon Highlight Kwara’s First Horse Show



The maiden edition of the Kwara State Horse Show will gallop off on Saturday with a 30-kilometre horse marathon designed to explore newly constructed and upgraded roads across Ilorin by the Kwara State Government.


The event, organised in partnership with the state government, aims to showcase the beauty of equestrian sports and the rich cultural heritage of the people. It is convened by Ilorin-born expert horse rider, Ambassador Aliu Bolaji Magaji Nda.


Briefing sports journalists on Wednesday, the Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Dr. Jemila AbdulHameed Atata, said the marathon will flag off at Unity Bikers Club, while the grand finale on Sunday at Queen Elizabeth School, Ilorin, will feature a horseball tournament involving 10 competitive teams in a world-class display.


She assured that adequate security and medical support have been put in place to ensure a hitch-free event.


Dr. Atata explained that the show will provide a platform for networking and showcasing the state’s infrastructural strides. The tournament will feature female, children, and adult categories, with the star prize being a brand-new horse.


She added that there are plans to introduce a polo tournament in the future, noting that the Horse Show in Ilorin is an opportunity to demonstrate the peaceful, serene, and welcoming atmosphere of Kwara State.


The convener, Ambassador Aliu Magaji Nda, described the initiative as a community-driven programme aimed at discovering and promoting local horse riders.


He noted that participants are drawn from within and outside Ilorin to showcase their skills, adding that horse riding has deep cultural and sporting roots in the Ilorin Emirate.


Ambassador Nda, a seasoned horseman, has been widely celebrated for his aesthetic and impressive performances, including at the Ilorin Emirate Grand Durbar.
