Awoniyi Tips Kwara Kiddies League as Model for Youth Football Development
As the 2025 Kwara Kiddies League season draws to a close on Sunday in Ilorin, part-owner of the league and Super Eagles forward, Taiwo Awoniyi, has assured football stakeholders of a more standardised and properly structured competition next season.
The Nottingham Forest striker praised the unwavering commitment of Mallam Ibrahim Bako and Ibrahim Jatto for creating a platform that nurtures young footballers, describing their initiative as the foundation upon which he later partnered to further develop the league.
Speaking on a Channels Television sports programme, Awoniyi stressed that football development goes beyond assembling talented players, noting that structure remains the most important factor.
“Football is not just about bringing together the best players. It is about structure, and to build that structure, we must provide a platform that will guide these young players towards becoming professionals,” he said.
Awoniyi rated the Kwara Kiddies League as one of the best youth leagues in Nigeria, applauding its unique blend of education and football with the long-term goal of producing well-rounded individuals.
“The Kiddies League is a platform to develop talents not only in football but also in education,” he added.
The Super Eagles forward also commended Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, for his investment in grassroots football development, particularly his support for the Kiddies League. According to Awoniyi, the enabling environment created by the state government has been unprecedented and crucial to the programme’s success.
On the Super Eagles’ squad list for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Awoniyi expressed satisfaction, urging Nigerians to support the team fully.
“The players, the country and everyone must accept the list. The coach, Eric Chelle, knows what he wants,” he said, calling for maximum backing for the Eagles ahead of the continental showpiece in Morocco.
