2027 Kwara: Zoning, Money, or Structure—What Will Decide APC’s Next Governor?

2027 Kwara: Zoning, Money, or Structure—What Will Decide APC’s Next Governor?

With two years to the 2027 election, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has quietly entered succession mode. While public declarations are still absent, consultations, Abuja movements, and shifting alliances show that the governorship contest is already taking shape.

At the heart of the race is a familiar question: will the APC prioritise zoning, loyalty to the current power structure, or raw political strength?

Saliu Danladi Yakubu – Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly

As Speaker and a key figure within the current administration, Yakubu is widely viewed as a beneficiary if zoning favours Kwara North. His closeness to the governor strengthens his hand, though critics worry he represents continuity rather than renewal.

Senator Sadiq Umar – Kwara North

Calm, experienced, and widely respected, Sadiq Umar fits the zoning and competence arguments neatly. However, his independent profile raises questions about whether party power brokers are comfortable backing a successor with his own strong base.

Senator Saliu Mustapha – Kwara Central

A major force in Ilorin politics, Mustapha combines grassroots appeal with visible constituency projects. While seen as electorally viable, concerns persist about continued Kwara Central dominance and lingering intra-party rivalries.

Ambassador Yahaya Seriki – Kwara Central

Seriki’s name often comes up in conversations about money politics. His financial capacity is undeniable, but critics argue that resources alone may not overcome zoning resistance and credibility concerns.

Senator Lola Ashiru – Kwara South

Ashiru is the leading voice against zoning, insisting that competence and seniority should prevail. He commands respect across party lines, though some question his willingness to bankroll a costly governorship race.

Chief Iyiola Oyedepo – O to Ge Figure

A powerful mobiliser and symbol of the anti-Saraki movement, Oyedepo remains influential despite unclear party alignment. His integrity is admired, but his rigidity may limit coalition-building.

Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman – Former Minister

With national exposure and elite connections, Prof. Sulaiman adds depth to the field. Yet unresolved issues from his PDP past continue to complicate his standing within the APC.

Prof. Wale Sulaiman – Diaspora-Backed Technocrat

Backed largely by Nigerians in the diaspora, Prof. Wale Sulaiman brings technocratic appeal and a reform-focused message. His challenge lies in translating overseas support into local party structure.

As internal calculations deepen, the APC faces a defining choice. Whether it settles for zoning, loyalty, or sheer political muscle will shape not just its candidate—but its future in Kwara State.
