Sheikh Isalekoto Urges Authentic Islamic Knowledge to Tackle Extremism

An Ilorin-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Lukman Muktar Isalekoto, has identified insufficient knowledge of Islam, inadequate understanding, and exaggeration in the translation of the Quran and Hadith as major causes of extremism and terrorism wrongly associated with the religion.

Sheikh Isalekoto stated this on Sunday while delivering a lecture at the annual Laylatul Qadr programme organised by the Nuru-L-Haq Islamic Society of Nigeria, Itakure, Ilorin.

The lecture, titled “Creed to Conflicts: How Distorted Belief Fuels Extremism and Terrorism – Islamic Point of View,” examined how misinterpretation of Islamic teachings can lead to radicalisation and violent tendencies.

According to the cleric, the solution to the persistent problem of extremism lies in seeking authentic knowledge of Islam and encouraging moderation in sermons, particularly among religious leaders and other stakeholders.

He stressed that promoting accurate teachings would help remove the negative perception linking Islam with terrorism.

Sheikh Isalekoto further warned that it is a grave sin before Allah for Muslims to label fellow believers as non-believers because of differences in the practice of the teachings of Prophet Muhammad.

He also advised parents and guardians to monitor where their children acquire Islamic knowledge to prevent exposure to distorted teachings.

While commending the Nuru-L-Haq Islamic Society for using its platform to propagate Islam, the scholar urged the mission board to dedicate special sessions during the weekend Asalatu programme for children of members to study the Quran and Hadith.

According to him, such initiatives would help raise a generation of Muslims grounded in authentic knowledge and reduce the tendency toward extremism.

The programme also featured special prayers for Kwara State and Nigeria led by the Chief Missioner of the organisation, Sheikh Mohammed Awwal.

A special appeal fund was equally launched for the completion of the society’s permanent site located in the Sango area of Ilorin.
